If you have never planted watermelon because of lack of space, you will be glad to know that this compact plant produces an abundant crop of deliciously sweet, 7", 8-10 lb. fruit on 8' vines. Once you try Sugar Baby watermelons, their juicy sweetness will make your mouth water for more! The fruit is bright red and contains fewer than average very small seeds. Drought tolerant and disease resistant. This packet plants: One 15 foot row (after thinning, 7 vining plants). When to sow outside: RECOMMENDED. 1 to 2 weeks after average last frost and when soil temperatures are warm. When to start inside: 4 to 6 weeks before average last frost. Special Sowing & Germination Instructions: Watermelon seedlings don't transplant well; when starting indoors, use individual pots such as peat or pulp pots that can be planted directly into the ground. Watermelons love heat and are very frost sensitive. Cover soil with black plastic before seeding outside and seed into a cross cut into plastic. This will help warm the soil and keep down weeds. Seeds can either be planted in rows or on gently rounded mounds 4' - 6' apart. If planting mounds, sow 2 seeds per mound and thin to one when vines are 4" long. Harvesting: It can be tricky to tell when a watermelon is ripe. There are two recommended methods. First, check the "ground spot", the part of the watermelon that is lying on the ground. For most of the season, it is white; when the fruit is ripe, it turns to a creamy or golden color. Second, the curly tendrils on the vine closest to the watermelon become dried out and turn brown. Check tendrils daily; if brown too long, watermelon may be over ripe.

Curtis and Judy met while waiting to interview for the same horticultural job and soon found they shared a boundless enthusiasm for gardening. Botanical Interests began out of their mutual passion and personal desire for better quality seed and more informational tools to help and inpire gardeners.
"We wanted a level of purity and quality that wasn't easy to find," recalls Curtis. So they searched out the highest quality seed available and began their business in 1997, in the spare bedroom of their Colorado home. The business objectives they established then still hold strong for them now: to inspire and educate gardeners; to provide high quality seed to their customers; and to create an enjoyable work place for employees.
Over the years, Judy and Curtis' family has grown along with their line of seeds which now attracts and pleases customers nationwide.
