Steve Lee was no stranger to tea. He co-founded and helped build two successful tea brands, Stash and Tazo tea. He had heard of the wonders of kombucha in the 1980s but it was not until his Russian business travels of the 1990s that interest and intrigue grew into something more. Visiting the home of his Russian business partner, Steve asked his partner's aged mother the secret of her longevity and vitality. With a twinkle in her eye, she brought him the jar with the kombucha culture she always kept brewing, from an original culture given to her by her great aunt in Siberia in 1939. The concept of some 3,000 weekly generations of kombucha being brewed through over 50 years of Russian history gave Lee chills and captured his imagination. He asked for the recipe and a portion of the culture, called "starter," that he could take to America.
He brought the precious starter home and began brewing kombucha in his own kitchen. Inspiration became a passion as he observed the effects of the drink on his own sense of well-being. Steve became convinced that more people should be able to experience the wellness benefits of kombucha, without all the trouble of home brewing.
Thus, acting on his desire to spread health and well-being and to bring people of different cultures together, he set out to make Kombucha Wonder Drink a reality.
