And this is the way Grandpa told it to me:

"In the famous Singapore Olympics, 1902, the Main Event was the Cookie Sling. In those days they didn't toss their cookies, they slung 'em. Singapore slang for slinging was slunging. The odds-on slunging favorite was a thug by the name of Sam Shummer. In the final competition, Shummer slung his cookies three feet, two. But then Erma Newmanoodle, an underdog from Hungary, slung a world cookies record of three feet, four, which slung Shummer into a slough of despair.

Alas! When Erma took her victory lap, her cookie began to melt in the hot Singapore sun. So it was revealed that she had secretly and slyly slipped illegal slivers of chocolate into her cookie for more lift and weight. Thus, she lost the Gold.

Secretly and slyly she took her cookie next door to the Olympic Cookie Bake-Off where, to the cheers of all Middle Europe, Erma took the Blue Ribbon Supreme Cookie of the Year award. So there!"

Her all-world cookie survives, unblemished, to this day and has never been bested...whence come the Newman's Own Champion Chip Cookies.

I freely admit I first bought these cookies because I was 13 years old when I saw "Somebody Up There Likes Me" and, like every other female on earth, nearly fell off my movie seat. The picture was in black and white, folks, couldn't even see the eyes. Who knew the man this now old woman had a crush on for her entire life would turn out to be one of the most decent human beings who ever lived? Also, my grandchildren like his chocolate chip cookies better than mine! If that isn't an endorsement, I don't know what is. God's blessings forever on Paul Newman and all his family. Would that this world had more like him - and his dab hand at cooking as well.
