Passionflower became a popular European calming tea after it was discovered in Peru in the 16th Century. Presently, it is widely prescribed in Europe for soothing nerves or as a sleep aid, where the majority of the studies have been conducted. Research to date indicates that there is a synergistic activity of several chemical components; namely the flavonoids and alkaloids which act on the nervous system.
